FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 45 Fresno State men's tennis squad begins the spring season with a conference doubleheader against Nevada and Idaho on Saturday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
The first match of the day pits the Bulldogs against Nevada at 10 a.m., then at 5 p.m. Fresno State faces Idaho.
With two doubles teams nationally ranked, the Bulldogs look to the doubles to be a strength this season. Seniors Mirko Zapletal and Taylor Leiby compiled an 8-1 record together, en route to their current No. 20 ranking. The No. 36 duo of junior Rikus de Villiers and sophomore Remi Boutillier have yet to lose a match together this year, with a perfect 7-0 record.
The 'Dogs also feature the No. 83 singles player in the country, David Ayoun. The sophomore from Ceteil, France, has been a nice addition to the team and went 7-3 in the fall.
The Wolf Pack comes into the match with a 0-1 record, after dropping their conference opener, 6-1, to Hawai'i on the road. Nevada has an experienced team, with all but one player from last year's squad returning for 2010.
Last season when the 'Dogs and Wolf Pack met in Reno, Nev., Fresno State came away with a 6-1 victory.
Fresno State also recorded a 6-1 victory over the Vandals in 2009. Idaho boasts the No. 58 doubles team in the country in juniors Alex Joitoiu and Lachlan Reed.
Fresno State is 5-0 all time against Idaho and 7-0 in the series history with Nevada.
After the conference doubleheader, the 'Dogs next home match will be on Jan. 26 against Pacific at 4 p.m.
