FRESNO, Calif. - Joh-Teena Filipe scored a career-high 18 points and the Fresno State women's basketball team set a school record for its best start in conference play by beating Boise State on Wednesday evening in front of a nationally televised audience, 73-66. Fresno State is now 16-5 and 7-0 in WAC while Boise State dropped to 13-7 and 2-4 in conference.
"You have to give a lot of credit to Boise State," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "They play hard and they are going to win a lot more WAC games by the time our 16 game conference schedule is over. I was proud of the fact that mentally we stayed involved and did some good things. We didn't foul. We blocked out and didn't put them on the free throw line. We are proud of where we are at right now but we realize we still have nine games left."
Filipe scored her 18 points on six of 10 shooting from the field and she hit six free throws and grabbed a team-best nine rebounds in 22 minutes of play.
"She did a great job," Wiggins said. "Early on she took shots that were tremendous shots for her. She is quick and agile around the basket and those were the shots she was getting. She did a good job of hustling and putting herself in a good position. It doesn't surprise me. Over the last few years she has played better down the stretch."
Emma Andrews had 13 points off the bench while Hayley Munro had 11 points and Jaleesa Ross added 11 and five assists. As a team the Bulldogs had 16 assists.
"This team just shares the ball really well," Wiggins said. "From our point position to our post positions this team really passes well. If you look down the board we really pass the ball well. When you share it like that you are going to get easy uncontested shots."
Both teams shot 40.6 percent from the floor and the Bulldogs out rebounded Boise State 41-39.
The Bulldogs led the entire game but never led by more than 13 points. That moment came with 6:42 left in the game when Fresno State led 64-51 after a 3-pointer by Ross. Boise State cut the Dog lead to 70-66 with 1:44 left but the Broncos would get no closer.
Fresno State led 36-29 at halftime and jumped out to a 12-4 lead to open the game. The lead was extended to 25-14 after a 3-point play by Andrews with 10:30 remaining in the first period. Boise State got within one at 30-29 with 1:43 left in the game. Fresno State then scored the final six points of the half to take the seven-point lead into the break.
The Bulldogs return to the floor on Saturday when they play at San Jose State at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on 790 ESPN Radio.
