Dogs Take on Rival Spartans
After three consecutive home games, the Bulldogs return to the road for the first time since Sept. 25. Fresno State begins a two-game road set at rival San Jose State. The Spartans are coming off a 48-0 loss to Boise State at home last weekend and are 1-2 at Spartan Stadium this season. The Bulldogs are 1-1 in road games, with a WAC win at Utah State and a loss at Ole Miss.
About the Spartans
No team in the nation has played a more difficult schedule than San Jose State with five of their seven games against teams ranked in the Top 25 (No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Boise State, No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 13 Utah and No. 21 Nevada). The Spartans are 1-6 on the season, 0-2 in WAC games. The lone win was a 16-11 victory over Southern Utah. Last weekend the Spartan lost to the Broncos at home 48-0. San Jose State has been outscored 239-62 points this season. Jordan Le Secla is the team's top quarterback, completing 59 percent of his passes for 954 yards and two touchdowns. Lamon Muldrow has 324 yards as the top rusher with touchdowns. Vince Buhagiar is the team's top tackler with 50.
Against the Spartans
The Bulldogs and Spartans will be playing for the 75th time in a series that began in 1921. Thanks to wins in 15 of the last 16 games, the Dogs own the all-time series advantage 38-33-3. Fresno State owns a three-game winning streak in the series and won those games by a combined score of 115-30, including 41-21 last season at Bulldog Stadium.
Halftime Highlights
Through the mid-point of the season, here are a few of the season's highlights:
- Fresno State ranks fourth in the NCAA and leads the WAC with 20 quarterback sacks
- Two Bulldogs have been honored as National Defensive Players of the Week, Logan Harrell vs. Cincinnati and Chris Carter vs. New Mexico State
- The Bulldogs opened the season with an impressive 28-14 win over two-time defending Big East champion Cincinnati, Fresno State's 16th win over an BCS AQ school since 2000
- Senior quarterback Ryan Colburn has been ranked among the Top 5 NCAA passers at times this season
Carter Wins National Award
For the second time this season, a Bulldog defensive lineman has been selected national player of the week. Chris Carter was named the National Defensive Lineman of the Week by College Football Performance.com. Logan Harrell also won the award in the first game of the season against Cincinnati. Carter made nine tackles, three sacks for 18 yards, four tackles for losses of 34 yards and forced two fumbles in Fresno State's 33-10 win over New Mexico State. Eight of Carter's nine tackles were solo. He spearheaded a Bulldog defense that held the Aggies to three points and just 34 rushing yards through the first three quarters of the game as Fresno State built a 33-3 lead. Carter leads the Bulldog defense that ranks fourth in the nation in quarterbacks. The Dogs have 20 on the season. Carter and defensive tackle Logan Harrell pack a devastating 1-2 punch on the line. Harrell has 7.5 sacks and ranks fourth in the nation, while Carter is fifth in the NCAA in seven sacks. Carter ranks second in the WAC and eighth in the NCAA with 11 tackles for losses this season.
