FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team hits the road to defend their Valley Cup title against CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
The Roadrunners won the first Valley Cup in 2008. The winning team is crowned the best of the Valley and gets to keep the trophy for a year.
Against CSU Bakersfield
This is the seventh meeting between the two schools. The Bulldogs lead the series 4-1-1. Fresno State won the last meeting 2-0. The Bulldogs haven't lost to the Roadrunners when playing in Bulldog Stadium. The first meeting in school history was in 1997 and the `Dogs won 3-0.
About the Roadrunners
CSU Bakersfield enters the match with a six game unbeaten streak dating back to Sept. 10, 2010. The Runners have an overall record of 3-4-4. Tyler Shirk leads the team in goals with three and points with seven. Kassi Massey has a team high three assists. Goalkeeper Kim Gause has 45 saves in 10 games and two shutouts.
Against Hawai'i
Fresno State's rivalry with Hawai'i dates back to 1996, when the schools met for the first time and resulted in a 0-0 tie. Sunday marks the 17th meeting and the `Dogs lead the series 8-6-2. The `Dogs have a 5-1-1 record against the Rainbow Wahine when playing at home. The Bulldogs had a four game winning streak from 2004-06.
About the Rainbow Wahine
Hawai'i enters the weekend with a record of 2-10-1. Mari Punzal and Chelsea Deptula have three goals each this season. Punzal leads the team in points with eight (three goals and two assists). Kanani Taaca has 31 saves in 13 games and one shutout.
`Dogs in Extra Minutes
The Bulldogs have taken four games into extra minutes under second year head coach Brian Zwaschka. The `Dogs are 1-2-1 in overtime games, all have occurred this year. Fresno State earned a win over Texas State, a loss against UC Davis and San Jose State and tied UC Santa Barbara.
Duff # 1 in Points
Senior Nicole Duff is leading the way offensively for the Bulldogs in 2010. She leads the team in points with eight on the year. The forward has recorded a team-high three goals and two assists.
Nizzoli Leads Team in Shots
Junior Molly Nizzoli leads the team in shots in 2010. The midfielder has 21 shots and 10 shots on goal. Her on goal percentage is .467. Nizzoli is averaging 2.33 shots per game. She has two assists and a goal this season.
"We Are Your Team!" The Bulldogs head to CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 7 to defend their Valley Cup title and play their last non-conference match of the year. The `Dogs return home on Oct. 10 as they host Hawai'i at 1 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium. Join the `Dogs in celebrating the 100 year anniversary of Fresno State. The first 100 fans will receive special edition Centennial pins and Fresno State Market's Centennial Edition ice cream will be given out while supplies last.
