FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team dominated Louisiana Tech from start to finish for a 3-0 sweep during an impressive return to the Save Mart Center on Thursday night.
"I'm glad we came out and took care of business tonight," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell of her team's performance.
Fresno State cruised through the first two sets by set scores of 25-17 and 25-15 before closing out the sweep with a 25-23 victory in the third set.
Sophomore Marissa Brand led Fresno State with 19 kills on 45 attacks.
"Marissa is learning so fast," Netherby-Sewell commented on the talented outside hitter. "She is becoming very competitive and has been playing very well."
There was a fresh new face who earned some significant playing time on the court. Freshman Megan Callahan helped spark Fresno State to their second WAC victory tonight with a career-high two kills on four attacks.
"I was a little nervous at first but as soon as I got out there and started playing I just started to feel a flow going and I got very comfortable," Callahan noted.
Netherby-Sewell has been working hard to make sure the non-starters are getting playing time to help motivate the starters and improve the team's overall level of play.
"Our non-starters need to push our starters," Netherby-Sewell said. "By having the non-starters get out there and experience more playing time, it will push our starters to play better."
Sophomore Taylor Horton also shined on the outside for Fresno State racking up 11 kills and 24 attacks
"We put Taylor outside for Korrin tonight and Taylor was very consistent," Netherby-Sewell stated about the position change. "Having two consistent outside hitters is very helpful."
Fresno State improved to 7-9 on the season and 2-3 in WAC play while Louisiana Tech fell to 10-9 on the year and 0-4 in WAC action.
The Bulldogs will take on New Mexico State, who is in second place right in the WAC after the Aggies' 3-0 win at San Jose State tonight, on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Save Mart Center.
"Saturday will be a totally different type of competition," Netherby-Sewell added. "New Mexico State is a really great team but we are ready for them."
