Successful Day One at Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - The Classic is set up in a hidden dual match, most of the athletes competed in two doubles and three single matches.
Starting the day off in doubles, teams consisted of Abby Hayley / Olga Kirpicheva, Melissa McQueen / Anna Mikhaylova, and Laura Pola / Bianca Modoc. Fresno State battled Portland State and each team earned the two doubles victories.
Paired for the first time this season, Pola and Modoc defeated Portland State's Yuki Sugiyama and Anya Dalkin, 8-1 and Nayantara Vadali and Emily McClaran, 8-0.
McQueen and Mikhaylova continued the Bulldog victories and defeated Portland State's Caitlin Stocking and Marti Pellicano, 8-0 and Yuki Sugiyama and Anya Dalkin, 8-6.
Also paired for the first time, Kirpircheva and Hayley defeated Portland State's Marina Todd and Kylea Gleason, 8-1 and Caitlin Stocking and Marti Pellicano, 8-5.
In singles the Dogs were as successful, four of the six earned victories.
Hayley played with fierce determination today after picking up wins from Pacific's Susan Te, 6-2, 6-2 and Christina Goehl, 6-3, 6-4.
Mikhaylova, the sophomore from Obninsk, Russia earned victories over Pacific's Sarah Irvin, 6-4, 6-4 and Portland State's Caitlin Stocking, 6-2, 6-3.
Kirpircheva earned a victory over Pacific's Olga Gumenyuk, 7-5, 6-2. Modoc continued the Bulldog victories and earned one over Portland State's Kylea Gleason, 6-0, 6-1.
In her first match for singles, McQueen battled Pacific's Christina Goehl. After taking her to three matches, the sophomore from Whitby, Canada dropped the match, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. She went on to compete against Pacific's Susan Te but withdrew from the match due to an injury.
Coming off two victories in doubles, Pola was ready to take on Saint Mary's lone player Laurie Gingras. In the third set, Pola hurt her wrist and had to withdraw from competition, 2-1, inj.
"It was positive for our team to play in so many matches in one day," said head coach Simon Thibodeau, "we got to work on our games and also, winning most of them."
Competition will continue tomorrow at the Sierra Sport Racquet Club at 12:30 p.m. located on 2626 West Alluvial Fresno, CA 93711. Sunday's competition will reconvene at Wathen Tennis Center at 8:30 a.m.
