Nine Dogs Earn All-WAC Honors

FRESNO, Calif. - The Western Athletic Conference announced its all-WAC teams and coach and players of the year awards as voted upon by the WAC's nine head coaches. In all nine Bulldogs were selected to the first or second teams.
Leading the way for the Dogs were student-athletes who were selected first-team All-WAC for the second straight seasons. Senior defensive end Chris Carter was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Year, while senior linebacker Ben Jacobs and junior kicker Kevin Goessling were picked. Joining them on the first team were senior offensive tackle Kenny Wiggins and junior defensive tackle Logan Harrell.
Carter, a senior defensive lineman from Fontana, Calif. (Kaiser Fontana), leads the WAC and is seventh in the nation in sacks with 11.0 for a loss of 63 yards on the season. He is tied for second in the WAC in tackles for loss with 16.5. He has a total of 55 tackles (32 solo). He has also forced four fumbles on the year. Carter has helped lead Fresno State to third in the WAC in total defense. This is Fresno State's fourth WAC Defensive Player of the Year award as defensive tackle Alan Harper won it in 2001, defensive lineman Garrett McIntyre won it in 2005 and linebacker Marcus Riley won it in 2007.
Boise State led the league with 11 first-team all-WAC honorees, while Fresno State and Nevada placed five on the first team and Hawai`i had three. Boise State's Kellen Moore and Nevada's Colin Kaepernick were named the co-Offensive Players of the Year, Fresno State's Chris Carter earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, and San Jose State's Keith Smith was named the Freshman of the Year. Nevada's Chris Ault was voted the WAC's Coach of the Year.
Bulldogs on the second team were junior receiver Jamel Hamler and junior offensive tackle Bryce Harris, senior cornerback Desia Dunn and sophomore linebacker Travis Brown. Brown was one of three sophomores on either first or second team, joining Idaho punter Bobby Cowan (first team) and Nevada offensive lineman Chris Barker (second team).
A total of 13 first-team all-WAC players were repeat selections from last year: Boise State wide receiver Austin Pettis, Boise State wide receiver Titus Young, Hawai`i wide receiver Greg Salas, Boise State offensive lineman Nate Potter, Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore, Nevada running back Vai Taua, Boise State defensive lineman Ryan Winterswyk, Fresno State defensive lineman Chris Carter, Nevada defensive lineman Dontay Moch, Fresno State linebacker Ben Jacobs, Utah State linebacker Bobby Wagner, New Mexico State defensive back Davon House and Fresno State placekicker Kevin Goessling.
Hawai`i placed a WAC-high seven players on the second team while Fresno State, Idaho and Nevada had four apiece.
