FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Bhavik Patel has been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Men's Golfer of the Week for Feb. 1-7.
Patel, a sophomore from Bakersfield, Calif. (Bakersfield HS), tied for second place at the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate early last week after shooting 10-under par (69-65-69--203).
He was one of just two players to shoot three rounds in the 60s. His second round 65 was the best of the tournament and ties for the best round by a WAC player during the 2009-10 season.
Patel posted 18 birdies during the tournament to help lead the Bulldogs to a third place team finish. Fresno State finished better than No. 3 Florida, defending NCAA champion Texas A&M and No. 15 UNLV.
This was his second WAC award this season and the third of his career. This award was for the competition week of Feb. 1-7, which means it did not cover his win at this week's USD Callaway Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., a tournament he won by three strokes.
"We are Your Team" - The Bulldog men's golf team will travel to the John Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii Feb. 17-19. Follow gobulldogs.com for more information.
