`Dogs and Bears Go to the Wire

FRESNO, Calif. - No. 46 Fresno State squared off against 33rd-ranked California on Wednesday in Berkeley, Calif., as the Bears came away with a 4-3 victory.
Cal won the doubles point, but Fresno State's No. 83 David Ayoun overcame Cal's 98th-ranked Bozhidar Katsarov, 7-5, 6-2, to tie the team score at 1-1.
The Bears won the next two matches and went up 3-1 at that point, but the Bulldogs fought back as Mirko Zapletal defeated the Bears' Pedro Zerbini, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Remi Boutillier beat Nick Andrews, 6-0, 6-7 (5), 7-5.
The last match of the day was the deciding point, as Cal's 33rd-ranked Jonathan Dahan came up with a three-set, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Tejesvi Veerepalli, to clinch the match for the Bears.
"It was a tough see-saw battle and Cal came up with the win at the end," Fresno State head coach Jay Udwadia said. "It was a good battle. Now it's time to get ready for our matches on Sunday."
The Bulldogs will now prepare for a doubleheader on Sunday against Santa Clara and San Francisco at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
