`Dogs Win Bayer CropScience Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team ended the Bayer CropScience Classic on Sunday at Bulldog Diamond with an 11-3 win in five innings over Mississippi State and a 3-2 loss to Colorado State. The `Dogs went 4-1 on the weekend and were named tournament champions. They are 15-9 on the year.
Mackenzie Oakes was named the tournament MVP after pitching a perfect game against Georgetown. On the weekend, she went 2-0 with a 1.43 ERA.
Andrea Ortega was also named to the all-tournament team. She played and started in all five games over the weekend, hitting .500 with a team-high nine hits and eight RBIs.
"Everybody contributed this weekend," said head coach Margie Wright. "It's frustrating that we couldn't have won that last game but I felt like our team did a lot of great things all week."
Game One
Mississippi State scored three runs off of Oakes in the first inning on four hits. Michelle Moses entered to get the final out in the circle for the `Dogs.
Haley Gilleland led off the bottom of the first with a single to left field. An infield single by Courtney Moore put the `Dogs on the board. A walk to Caitlin Stiglich loaded the bases. Lisamarie Coronado drove in two more with a single to center field to tie the game. Another walk by Kylie Vry to Nicole Angene loaded the bases once again for the `Dogs. Fresno State took a 4-3 lead with a single to left by Rebecca Walker.
Stephanie Becker entered to pitch for Mississippi State with one out in the first.
Becker walked Brooke Phipps to drive in a run and hit Gilleland with a pitch for a 6-3 Bulldog lead.
An Ortega single up the middle drove in two more for an 8-3 lead after one inning.
In the bottom of the second, Stiglich led it off by reaching on an error by the MSU shortstop. Coronado followed with a single to left field. Walker hit an infield single to load the bases. An illegal pitch walked in Stiglich for a 9-3 lead after two innings.
After a double by Coronado, walks to Walker and Gilleland loaded the bases for Ortega with two outs in the fourth. Ortega's third single of the game drove in two as the `Dogs jumped to an 11-3 lead.
The `Dogs had 10 hits, led by Ortega and Coronado with three each.
Moses picked up her first career win the circle and had a career-high eight strikeouts while allowing just one hit in 4.1 innings.
Game Two
Courtney Moore drew a walk in the bottom of the second and score on a double by Nicole Angene to put the `Dogs up 1-0.
Jody Badorine and Gilleland led off the bottom of the third with back-to-back singles. Moses drove in Badorine for a RBI as the `Dogs went up 2-0.
Colorado State tied the game in the top of the fourth and in the top of the fifth took a 3-2 lead.
Oakes entered to replace Morgan Melloh in the circle and in 2.2 innings allowed just two hits and had two strikeouts. Melloh picked up the loss and is now 8-6 on the year. She allowed two earned runs in 4.1 innings while striking out four.
The `Dogs had eight hits in the game, led by Angene with three.

Fresno State, Colorado State and Cal State Northridge all end the tournament with 4-1 records, but because of run differential, Fresno State is crowned tournament champions. Cal State Northridge finished second and Colorado State third. Mississippi State was fourth with a 2-3 record, ETSU was fifth at 1-4 and Georgetown finished with a 0-5 record.
