FRESNO, Calif. - He's said all along that he's got a good golf team. Mike Watney's crew proved it again at the annual USC Invitational with a strong seventh place finish is a brutally tough field. The tournament was so difficult that two of the nation's top 10 ranked teams barely finished in the Top 10 of this event.
The Fresno State Bulldogs were right in the middle of that pack, finishing the tournament with a 2-over par score of 854, just three strokes behind the host No. 16 Trojans, and ahead of No. 2 Stanford and No. 8 UCLA, which finished eighth and ninth, respectively.
Oregon ran away with the tournament title shooting 21-under par, 16 shots ahead of second place Cal. The Ducks are one of the many teams competing in next week's Fresno Lexus Classic at San Joaquin Country Club.
Bryan Hogan (69-69-71--209) finished his best tournament as a Bulldog, tying for fifth at 4-under par. He shot an even-par round of 71 Tuesday, a solid round that included three birdies and 12 pars. For the tournament he finished with 12 birdies and didn't have a score worse than bogey over 54 holes.
Senior Grant Doverspike (71-71-69--211) finished the tournament tied for 13th place after shooting a 2-under par round of 69 on Tuesday. For the tournament, he made 11 birdies and one eagle.
Sophomore Bhavik Patel tied for 25th place at 1-over for the tournament. Adam Barkow (73-77-74--224) and Michael Gideon (78-74-73--225) tied for 60th and 67th, respectively.
"It was a good effort because we were right there with some of the best teams in the country," said Watney. "We had a good effort but we also have some things to work on to get ready for the Lexus next week. Unfortunately, we left a lot of strokes on the course around the green. We had some simple shots around the green that are normally automatic up and downs for these guys but we didn't convert. So we have some things to work on, but all in all, it was a good tournament for the Dogs."
"We are Your Team" Fresno State will host the annual Fresno Lexus Classic next week, March 8-9, at the San Joaquin Country Club. Follow gobulldogs.com for more information.
