FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldog women's soccer team continues to work hard on the field in the midst of their spring training. Off the field, head coach Brian Zwaschka and his coaching staff have been working on their recruiting class for their upcoming 2010 season. Zwaschka, who joined the Bulldogs late last spring, is pleased with his first Bulldog recruiting class.
"This is a unique incoming class for Fresno State Soccer," he said. "Considering how late in the recruiting process I took the helm of the team last spring, I was delighted to find this level of talent still available for my first group of new Bulldogs. It's not a big class, but this group will undoubtedly have a positive impact on our team in 2010."
Zwaschka announced Wednesday that Lauren Lindstrom and Catherine Sordo have signed valid National Letters of Intent to play soccer for Fresno State. The `Dogs finished 4-4 in WAC play for the 2009 season and will only be graduating one senior. With the bulk of the team returning for the 2010 season they are looking for continued development and improvement.
"With the promising outlook of our returners and what we as a new staff have been looking to build, this new class represents a solidifying step in this transitional period for the program," said Zwaschka.
The 2010 women's soccer recruiting class is made up of four individuals all coming from Central or Southern California.
"Their talent level, ambitious personalities, academic abilities, and excitement for our potential together all lead me to believe very good things are just around the corner for Bulldog soccer."
2010 National Letter of Intent Signees:
Lauren Lindstrom: A player who had a huge impact on her Oaks Christian High School team, both offensively and defensively. Her team's record over her years of competition was an impressive 76-15-8. She earned awards and honors each of her three years of varsity. Her senior year she was First-Team Tri-Valley League, First-Team All-CIF, First-Team All-Ventura City Star and the 2009 Defensive Player of the Year. Lindstrom also achieved honor roll and played varsity softball for three years. For all her academic and athletic achievements at Oaks Christian she earned the celebrated Lion Award.
Lindstrom on becoming a Bulldog: "I'm very excited to go to Fresno and become a Bulldog because it's close to family but still far enough away to have the best of both worlds. I chose Fresno State because the coaching staff is phenomenal and overall their sports program is very impressive."
Zwaschka on Lindstrom: "Lauren is one of the calmest defenders I have seen. She has restrained athleticism and a keen sense for when to unleash at the right moment. She is as technical as the most cultured attacking players I've seen and has dynamic ability in heading and long-range passing, which are two traits at a premium in the women's game nationally."
Catherine Sordo: A sophisticated and decorated player, who made multiple impacts at center midfielder for her Santa Cruz High School soccer team. Sordo was a four-year starter on the varsity squad. She earned First-Team All-Santa Cruz Athletic League and All-Santa Cruz County selections each of her four years. She also participated on a club team called the Santa Cruz County Breakers, through which she has been playing soccer since a very young age. She played two years of tennis in high school and one year of basketball. She plans to major in Criminology, and hopes to become a Police Officer.
Sordo on becomding a Bulldog:" I chose Fresno State because of the soccer coaching staff, athletic facilities, reputation, and its strong academic Criminology department."
Zwaschka on Sordo: "Catherine makes technically difficult play seem routine and I have her pegged as a severe competitor, despite her very even-keeled demeanor. She has tremendous ability to score and set up goals. I probably most look forward to seeing her gel with the talent we already have because I believe she can be a key ingredient in helping unlock the attacking potential of any of a number of our players."
