FRESNO, Calif. - The organizers of the 2010 Cal Poly-Lamkin Grip Match Play Tournament got all of the excitement they wanted in the finals of the event as the Fresno State Bulldogs and Sacramento State Hornets went down to the final hole to determine the champion. The Dogs lost to the Hornets 3-2 in the championship match.
Fresno State opened the tournament with a pair of wins over Utah Valley State and Cal State Bakersfield to reach the finals. The Hornets defeated Cal Poly Friday morning on the final hole to advance to the finals and used the same magic to defeat the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs and Hornets each had won two matches, with senior Grant Doverspike winning 3 and 2 and Bryan Hogan won 5 and 3, while Tim Toste lost 2 and 1 and Brian Sunker lost 4 and 3.
Bulldog Adam Barkow entered the 18th hole down 1 in his match and made a beautiful birdie that most thought would tie the match and force an overtime situation. However, Barkow's opponent followed up with a 20-foot birdie putt to win in the match and give the Hornets the team title.
"We didn't play our best today but that's sports sometimes," said head coach Mike Watney. "It was a good event and a fun experience for the guys. It was a very exciting finish to the event, even though we lost. There was a lot of drama."
The Bulldogs will have a short hiatus for spring break and then return to action at the prestigious Stanford Intercollegiate April 11-13.
"We have Stanford in a couple weeks and we have a break and them will come back to prepare for that," said Watney. "As always, it's a tough tournament and we feel like if we play well and do well we can guarantee our NCAA spot. So we will take it very seriously."
