FRESNO, Calif. - Underclassmen led the way for the Bulldogs at the Cal-Nevada Championships over the weekend.
Freshman Danny Vartanian led the charge for the men, bringing home the win in the 10,000 meter race. On the women's side, redshirt-sophomore Rosario Sanchez rounded out a great series of throws with a win in the shot put.
Vartanian emphatically won his first collegiate 10,000 on the track. The freshman timed a 31:22.61 in the longest race of the day, beating the second place finisher by more than 10 seconds. Vartanian's time is the best in conference this year
"Danny looked comfortable and relaxed the entire race," said head coach Scott Winsor. "The guy from Cal Poly Pamona tried to make a move a handful times to drop Danny but Danny just didn't go away. In the final lap of the race, the Cal Poly Pamona guy tried to drop Danny, but Danny just stayed with him and Danny blew by the guy with 200 meters to go and just took the wind out of his sails.
"It was a fun race to watch, which is something you don't say a lot with the 10,000. Danny ran confidently and comfortably throughout the race. It just kind of came together for him."
The Bulldogs made a team statement in the 400 hurdles. Three Fresno State racers earned lanes in the nine-man final. Among the 30 competitors, Val-Pierre Dai'Re finished fifth with a season-best 52.52. Kendrick Young and Myster Holliman took eighth and ninth, respectively.
"The long hurdlers did a really good job in prelims to get three through to the finals," said Winsor.
The 4x100 relay team of Charles Williams, Cameron Parker, Dai'Re and Quenton O'Neal scored a season-best time of 41.92.
Tim Greene had a season-high day over on the field. In his specialty, the hammer throw, Greene took third of the 25 competitors with a season-best mark of 197-10 (60.29m). He also marked a season-best in the discus, throwing a 160-9 (49.00m) for sixth of 27 throwers.
"Tim did a great job in both events," said Winsor. "His series in the hammer was the best series he's had all year."

The Fresno State women were led by Sanchez on the field. The redshirt-sophomore marked a 48-11.50 (14.92m) on her second throw of the day to win the 26-person event.
"Rosario did really well today," said Winsor. "She had a really good series. Her very first throw of the day was a really big throw, but it was a foul. One of these meets it's really going to happen for her."
Another thrower Jacqueline Vazquez picked up a Top 10 finish in the javelin. Vazquez threw a 132-9 (40.46)
The underclassmen also had a good showing on the track.
Sophomore Latrisha Jordan scored her season-best time in the 400 hurdles with a second-place finish. Jordan timed a 60.47 among the 32 competitors in the one-lap hurdles.
"Latrisha is getting back to where she wants to be and where we need her to be," said Winsor. "She's coming along nicely. We're excited about what's to come for her."
Freshman Marrijtje Molenhuis's career-best in the 1,500 pushed her in to the Top 10 at the meet. Molenhuis ran a 4:40.61, shaving more than four seconds off her previous best, to take ninth among the 32 racers in the 1,500.
The overall team places and scores were not available.
