Baseball Heads to Cal

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team heads to Berkeley for a mid week match up with Cal on Tuesday, March 30 at 2:30 p.m. It is the first meeting of the two schools since 2008 when the Golden Bears beat the Bulldogs, 14-4 and 5-4.
About the Golden Bears
Cal is 12-10 this season and last weekend got swept by No. 1 Arizona State. The Golden Bears are hitting .327 with 20 home runs and 59 doubles. Chad Bunting is hitting .458 with five doubles, a home run and 13 RBIs. The pitching staff has a combined ERA of 4.69 and have struck out 152 batters. Erik Johnson has a 2.96 ERA and a record of 3-1. He has recorded 26 strikeouts this season.
`Dogs Against the Pac-10
The `Dogs have faced every team in the Pacific -10 conference and have recorded an overall record of 169-286 over the years. The `Dogs have winning records against two-time National Champions Oregon State (23-8). The `Dogs also have winning records against Washington State (17-9) and Washington (9-8).
It Takes Two...
Fresno State fielded six double plays over the weekend against UC Davis and are tied for the most double plays turned in the nation. The Bulldogs have recorded a total of 33 this season. Against Oregon, the Bulldogs tied the single game record of five double plays. The last time that many double plays were turned was in 1986 against Washington State and Pacific.
Stealing Extra Bases
The Bulldogs are 21 of 28 in stealing extra bases in 2010. Dusty Robinson has the most stolen bases with five. Brennan Gowens (4-4), Trent Garrison (1-1) and Bobby Coyle (3-3) are perfect when it comes to stealing bases. Danny Muno is two stolen bases away from joining the top 10 base stealers in Fresno State history.
Double Trouble
Sophomore Brennan Gowens added two doubles over the weekend against UC Davis. Gowens has hit a team high 12 doubles this season. He leads the WAC in doubles and he has two games were he has hit multiple doubles. The Bulldogs have hit a total of 54 doubles this season.
Another One Bites the Dust
Whenever an opposing batter is struck out at Beiden Field, "Another One Bites the Dust" is played. Already this season teams are tired of hearing it after the Bulldogs have a total of 134 strikeouts. Josh Poytress leads the team in strikeouts with 24.
Bulldog Bats Heating Up
As a team, the `Dogs are hitting .310 with 54 doubles, five triples, 25 home runs and 143RBIs. Junior Jordan Ribera is leading the way with eight home runs and 34 hits. Ribera is sporting the highest batting average of the starters at .362. Brennan Gowens has the most doubles on the team, hitting 12. Dusty Robinson leads the team in RBIs with 23.
`Dogs on a Roll
The hits continue to roll in for the Bulldogs. Jordan Ribera kept his hit streak alive with hits on Friday and Saturday before bringing it to an end on Sunday. Ribera's 13-game hitting streak was the longest of the season. He has a recorded a hit in every game from March 7 to March 27. Brennan Gowens has the longest current hit streak on the team with five hits. He previous streak of 10 is the second longest hitting streak behind Ribera's 13.
