BERKELEY, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team rallied for four late inning runs to tie the game before losing to Cal, 8-5.
The Bulldogs recorded five runs on 10 hits. Garrett Weber, Daniel Moultrie and Steve Detwiler all went 2-for-4 against the Bears. The Bulldog pitching staff combined for nine struck outs and Gene Escat led the way with four strikeouts.
Cal scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning taking the first lead of the game, 2-0.
In the second inning, Steve Detwiler doubled to center field. Designated hitter Daniel Moultrie followed with a double down the right field line bringing in Detwiler cutting the Golden Bears lead, 2-1.
Cal added two runs in the third and fourth innings increasing their lead, 4-1. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Detwiler threw a runner out at home plate to end the inning and preventing the Bears from increasing their lead.
Moultrie singled to shallow right field in the top of the seventh inning. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Bobby Coyle singled to left field moving Moultrie to third base. Second baseman Danny Muno doubled to left center field bringing in two runs cutting the Bears lead, 4-3.
Cal scored a run in the seventh inning extending their lead, 5-3.
In the eighth inning, Austin Wynns singled through the left side. Third baseman Garrett Weber hit another single through the left side moving Wynns to second base. Detwiler hit a triple to right field driving in two runs tying the ball game, 5-5. Cal regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Golden Bears won the mid week match up, 8-5.
The Bulldogs head home to host CSU Bakersfield Thursday, April 1 at 6:05 p.m.
