FRESNO, Calif. - With the loss of a strong running back and wide receivers to graduation, there are a lot of positions and roles that the offensive unit is learning. With each practice, assistant coach and passing game coordinator Jeff Grady continues to be pleased with how the offensive unit is performing.
"Our execution has been good and it has gotten better each day," Grady said. "Day one we weren't very crisp as we were breaking some new guys in at some new spots. Day two was better and we had a good day three today."
Grady said that by the end of spring practice on May 1 he hopes the unit has established its identity.
"I want to see a close cohesive group that is ready to role," Grady said. "I want to see ourselves establish our identity. This is a new team and we have different guys. We need to establish who we are and find that out. The spring is the perfect time to do that."
Defensive Update
Like the offense, there is competition for many starting positions and Defensive Coordinator Randy Stewart has see his defensive unit battling hard through the first three spring practices.
"A lot of people are doing the right things," Stewart said. "We are able to get a lot of people on the field and get a lot of reps. We can use two deep or three deep. It may not be exactly what we want but everybody is functional. They know what they are doing."
Stewart hopes that that by the end of spring practice that he will be able to start putting together a two-deep depth chart.
"We have to start getting people working together and our packages together and get refined working as a unit," Stewart said.
No Scrimmage at Lemoore
The first spring scrimmage that was originally scheduled for Lemoore Naval Base will now take place at the Bulldog practice facility at 12 p.m.
