FRESNO, Calif. - Tuesday's round at the 2010 WAC Championships was not what head coach Angie Cates-Moore had in mind.
The Dogs entered the second round in third place, just two shots off the lead. Being in contention after not playing particularly well in the opening round was a pleasant surprise and the Dogs were antsy to take advantage of their position.
Unfortunately, Fresno State slipped two spots after a round of 316. The Bulldogs are tied with the Boise State at 622. The Dogs are eight shots out of fourth place and 11 shots from third.
San Jose State has a 2-stroke lead over Hawai'i after the second round of the 20th annual Club Glove Western Athletic Conference women's golf championship. The Spartans followed up yesterday's 304 with a 302 on Tuesday at the 6,146-yard, par-71 Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona.
The bright spot for the Bulldogs continues to be senior Hali Coppin, who is tied for second place one shot behind the leader. Coppin held a 3-shot lead after the first nine holes on Tuesday in which she shot 3-under par 32 with a birdie and an eagle.
Her eagle came on the eighth hole, a 258-yard par 4, a 40- yard chip from the desert wasteland rough. She shot a 42 on the back to finish 6-over par after two rounds.
She made 27 putts on the round, just 10 during the first nine holes.
Idaho moved up one spot to third place following its second round total of 303 led by sophomore Kayla Mortellaro who carded the only round under par so far in the tournament with a two-under 69. After shooting 78 on Monday, Mortellaro now leads the tournament at five-over par (78-69--147).
Idaho's Amanda Jacobs and Coppin (74-74--148) are tied for second one stroke behind Mortellaro while yesterday's leader, Erika Lundberg of Hawai'i, is tied for fourth along with San Jose State's Madeleine Ziegert at 149 (+7).
Bulldog senior Lindi Covarrubias shot a 77 for the second straight day and she stands 12-over par and tied for 13th place. Her round included three straight birdies on holes 13 through 15.
Louisa Lies is tied for 22nd (79-80--159), while Maria Pia Escandon (77-85--162) and Chelsea Czinski (78-88--166) are 29th and 34th respectively.
"I can't put my finger on why, but we obviously didn't play like we wanted or were capable today," said head coach Angie Cates-Moore. "I'm not sure what happened. No one is playing very well in this tournament. Not one team has been able to break 300. We will put all of our focus on finishing with a good round and certainly Hali has chance to win the tournament and that would be very exciting for her and for our program."
"We are Your Team!" The Bulldog women's golf team concludes the 2010 WAC Championships at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona on Wednesday. Follow the tournament via live scoring on GOLFSTAT
