FRESNO, Calif. - Their best round of the tournament and one of the best of any team during the final round of the Ping Cougar Classic couldn't move the Dogs up the leader board on the final day of the event.
Fresno State, despite shooting a team score of 282, 6-under par, finished the tournament in seventh place, the same spot it held after 36-holes. Only four teams in the 18-team field posted better scores than the Dogs.
"I feel better that we played better today and by looking at the scores, the good weather today had a positive effect on the rest of the teams as well," said Hall of Fame Coach Mike Watney. "I was really pleased to see Bryan Hogan play so well on the final round. He has a tendency to get down on himself and he really struggled with that in the first two rounds after some bad decisions and bad shots, but he really rebounded today. He's an immensely talented player who finished third at USC and we need him to play well for us to be able to contend."
Hogan (79-80-68--227) made five birdies and had just one bogey on his round and jumped 17 spots in the field to finish in 70th position. Only three players in the 96-man field turned in better scores on Saturday than Hogan.
Brian Sunker (71-70-74--215) was the top finisher for the Dogs at 1-under par for the tournament and tied for 13th place. It was just the third tournament for Sunker, a sophomore, this season and the highest finish of his career.
Junior Michael Gideon (71-74-71--216) shot even par for the tournament and tied for 20th place. He posted a score of 1-under par 71 on Saturday with two birdies and just one bogey.
Sophomore Bhavik Patel (77-71-71--219) was also 1-under for the round, his second straight under par round. He tied for 34th place. Senior Grant Doverspike (76-72-72--220) tied for 38th place after consecutive even par rounds.
The Bulldogs will play in the 2010 WAC Championships May 3-5 in Henderson, Nev. The Bulldog lost the WAC title to New Mexico State last season by one stroke. The Dogs have won 13 conference team titles under Watney's guidance over the years.
"We are looking forward to the WAC championships," said Watney. "We had our chances last year and I know our guys are hungry to get a championship. It's a very tough course and we will have to play well. We are looking forward to a good week of practice to get ourselves ready."
"We are Your Team!" The Bulldog men's golf team has more than a week off to prepare for the 2010 WAC Championship tournament in Henderson, Nev., May 3-5.
