FRESNO, Calif. - 2010 WAC regular season co-champion Fresno State hosts the WAC Men's Tennis Championships this weekend at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center for the first time since 2001.
With a 4-1 record in WAC play, the Bulldogs secured the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye for the tournament. Fresno State's first match will be in the semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. against the winner of the opening round matchup between third-seeded Boise State and sixth-seeded New Mexico State.
The 'Dogs enter the WAC Tournament with a 17-8 record overall. Fresno State ended the spring on a hot streak with four-straight wins to close out the season and it also won six of its last eight matches.
The biggest victory of the season came when the Bulldogs upset now-No. 9 Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, by the score of 4-3. The following day, they went on to sweep Rice, 4-0, to punch their ticket to the ITA National Team Indoors Sweet 16.
Both senior Tejesvi Veerepalli and sophomore David Ayoun have spent time in the ITA Singles Rankings this spring. The Fresno State doubles tandem of Rikus de Villiers and Remi Boutillier are currently ranked No. 22 in the country. Seniors Mirko Zapletal and Taylor Leiby have also been a nationally ranked doubles team and reached as high as No. 20 at one point this season.
The Bulldogs are the highest ranked team in the conference at No. 29, but the WAC is as deep as it has been in years. Four other teams in the WAC are ranked in the Top 75 -- No. 42 Boise State, No. 43 Hawai'i, No. 68 New Mexico State and No. 73 Idaho.
Fresno State is looking for its first WAC Tournament Championship since 1999 to secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, for its first appearance since 2004.
If the Bulldogs win on Saturday, they will play for the WAC Championship on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Wathen Tennis Center.
