BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team rallied from behind for the third-straight game against CSU Bakersfield and won, 13-9. It is the first sweep by the Bulldogs this season, who are 16-12 and start Western Athletic Conference play next week against Hawai'i.
The Bulldogs hit four home runs against the Roadrunners Saturday afternoon. Junior Bobby Coyle's three-run home run in the ninth inning sealed the win for the `Dogs.
Junior Jordan Ribera hit a two-run jack over the left field wall to tie the game for the second time in the game. Ribera hit two home runs Saturday afternoon and four against the Runners this series.
Catcher Trent Garrison drove in the go ahead run in the top of the eighth inning. The Bulldogs saw back-to-back home runs from Ribera and sophomore Dusty Robinson to tie the game in the third inning.
The Bulldogs recorded 13 runs on 18 hits and Coyle went 4-for-5. Ribera recorded four RBIs off his two home runs.
The pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts. Greg Gonzalez led the way with career-high seven strikeouts and earned his third win of the season.
Leadoff hitter Danny Muno opened the game with a double to left center field. Brennan Gowens grounded out moving Muno to third base. Designated hitter Bobby Coyle hit a sacrifice fly to left field driving in Muno giving the Bulldogs the lead, 1-0.
CSU Bakersfield answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning taking their first lead of the game, 2-1.
The Bulldogs got out of a bases loaded jam by turning a pair getting runners out at first and second base. Fresno State has successfully fielded 37 double plays.
In the second inning, Robinson singled through the left side. Catcher Trent Garrison followed with a single of his own through the right side moving Robinson to second base. Outfielder Steve Detwiler reached base on an error to load the bases. Justin Charles grounded out advancing the runners as Robinson scored tying the game, 2-2.
The Roadrunners took the lead again in the bottom of the second inning after scoring three runs.
Coyle hit a single to first base to open the third inning. Ribera hit a two-run home run to left field bringing the `Dogs within one, 5-4.
The next batter, Robinson hit a solo shot over the center field wall to tie the game, 5-5.
Derek Benny started on the hill for the Bulldog, his x start of the year. The righty threw four innings and struck out three batters while allowing only one walk. The Runners took back the lead in the bottom of the third inning scoring a run.
The Roadrunners added another run in the fourth inning increasing their lead, 7-5.
Junior Greg Gonzalez came out of the bullpen in the fifth inning. He sat down eight batters in order from the fifth to seventh inning. Gonzalez threw four scoreless innings out of his five inning outing, which is a career-high.
In the seventh inning, Robinson walked. Garrison singled up the middle moving Robinson to second base. Weber singled to right field bringing in a run as the Bulldogs trail, 7-6.
CSUB scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh increasing their lead, 9-6.
The top of the eighth inning, Charles led off with a double to the gap between center and left field. Muno grounded out as Charles moved to third base. Gowens grounded out allowing Charles to score and the `Dogs trail, 9-7.
Coyle beat out the throw to first base for a single. Ribera continued the rally with a well hit two-run home run over the left field wall to tie the game, 9-9.
Robinson reached base after getting hit by a pitch. The two out rally continued with a double down the left field lie from Garrison that brought in the go ahead run as the Dogs take the lead, 10-9.
In the ninth inning, Charles walked and Isacc Vivas pinch ran. Vivas advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Muno walked. Gowens grounded out moving the runners over to second and third for Coyle, who hit a three-run home run giving the Bulldogs their largest lead of the day, 13-9.
The Bulldogs won their third game in a row over CSUB, 13-9.
