FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State mixed it up Saturday at the Cal Poly Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Many of the Bulldogs took on events outside their typical "signature" events. Despite many competitors competing outside their comfort zone, Fresno State still left with 15 Top 5 finishes.
"We used the meet as almost a workout, putting a lot of our athletes in different events to give them a different taste for events," said head track and field coach Scott Winsor. "We stretched them outside their comfort zones and they did a really good job.
"Everyone really competed today. And I know it sounds like I say the same thing every week, but it's like that in this sport. We had some really good performances and we had some people that still need to step up."
The throwers led the women's team, picking up wins in three of the four throwing events at the Cal Poly Invitational. The women won the title in the hammer throw, the javelin and the shot put.
"The women's throwers are very consistent every week and that's what we're looking for from them," said Winsor. "I know that they are all getting close to throwing a really big one and that's exciting."
J'Quyra Moncur-Blue led the way in the hammer throw, winning the event with a toss of 169-8 (51.72m).
In the javelin throw, the Bulldogs went 1-2 on throws from Jacqueline Vazquez and Christina Cabias. Vazquez won the event, throwing the javelin 129-7.5 (39.51m), while Cabias marked a career-best 124-1.75 (37.84m) to finish in second to her teammate.
Rosario Sanchez finished on top in the shot put with a throw of 49-3.5 (15.03m), winning the event by nearly five feet. The day also continued Sanchez's trend of continually bettering her season best-mark. The redshirt-sophomore also earned a Top 5 finish in the discus throw.
Andrea Greenman cleared a season-high 11-11.5 (3.65m) in the pole vault to finish in the three-way tie for third.
The men's team picked up top finishes across the board.
On the track, Charles Williams earned bronze in the 100-meter with a season-best time of 11.03. Teammate Quenton O'Neal finished just back of Williams in fourth at 11.21. Williams later picked up a fifth-place finish in the 200.
Andre McCullouch ran his first collegiate 400, timing a 56.76 for fourth.
Cody Alves stepped up Saturday, running a career-best 1:55.54 for fifth in the 800.
Tim Greene earned a fourth place among the 20 competitors in the discus, throwing a 159-11.25 (48.75m). Raul Gonzalez also grabbed fourth place finish, marking a hammer throw of 161-3.75 (49.17m).
Jordan Smith and Darian Hutson both had Top 5 finishes in the triple jump. Jordan leapt 43-11.5 (13.40m) in the "hop, skip and a jump" for fourth. Huston jumped to a career-best 43-8 (13.31m) to take fifth.
The Bulldogs travel to Los Angeles for the Jackie Joyner Kersee/ Rafer Johnson Invitational at UCLA Friday and Saturday.
