FRESNO, Calif. - The first day of individual events at the 2010 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships produced solid results for the Bulldogs. Fresno State's men's team sits in fourth with 30 points, while the women are in eighth with 15. With only seven events scored and 28 left for Saturday's competition, team scoring is still very much up in the air.
"There are still a lot of points to be had tomorrow," said Winsor. "We have to go out there and leave it all out on the line."
Tim Greene gave the Bulldogs a solid start Friday in the day's first event, the hammer throw. The senior marked a season-best throw of 200-1 (61.00m) on his fifth toss of the day to pick up second place and first-team All-WAC honors.
"Tim threw well," said Winsor. "He was seeded fourth going in to the hammer and he finished second with a season-PR, so we were pretty happy with that. Actually, he threw well in both events. He scored ten points for the team today."
Greene stepped up for the team in a second event later in the day, earning a fifth-place finish in the discus. He threw a 159-0 (48.46m) on his third throw of the day for his second All-WAC honor for the meet.
Two Bulldogs scored points for the team in the 10,000-meter race, which was called early due to lightening in the area. The event was called with nine laps left in the race, so about 2/3 into the race. Junior Paul Zwama took second with a time of 21:43.97. Danny Vartanian finished in fifth at 22:05.15. Zwama earned first-team All-WAC honors and Vartanian, a freshman, scored second-team all-conference accolades.
"Paul and Danny looked really good," said Winsor. "They were running well and it would have been a good race to see to completion. And it would have been fun to see where Danny would have finished, as a freshman at his first conference meet running a 10K."
In preliminaries on the track, Cameron Parker advanced to the finals in both the 100 and 200-meter races. Frank Sanders finished first in the preliminaries of the 800. Cody Alves ran a qualifying time in the 800 as well. Both Bulldogs ran season-best times in the event to move on to the finals set for Saturday.
"We had some good prelim performances today," said Winsor. "Frank came through first in the 800 and Cody had a big PR to advance today. Our goal for everyone who advanced today is to finish ahead of where you're seeded; to get out and finish the task."
Rosario Sanchez led the women's team Friday. Sanchez put on her best shot put performance of the season. Sanchez threw a season-best 42-4.75 (15.97m) to finish in second and earn first-team All-WAC accolades. The redshirt sophomore's third throw, her best of the day, came within a half inch of her career-best mark set at the NCAA West Regional June 1, 2008, when she qualified for the NCAA Championships.

J'Quyra Moncur-Blue followed her teammate's example in the shot put. Moncur-Blue, a freshman, threw a career-best 45-3.75 (13.81m) to finish in fourth place. The throw not only bettered her previous best by 1.5 feet, but also earned second-team All-WAC honors in her first conference meet.
"J'Quyra's performance was a big boost to our team," said Winsor. "Her fourth place finish makes a big difference. Those are big points for our team. She did a great job, really stepped up and competed today."
Another Bulldog thrower stepped up for the team in the javelin. Jacqueline Vazquez took sixth in the javelin with a toss of 134-4 (40.95m)
Latrisha Jordan was the top qualifier for the 400 hurdle finals. Jordan ran a season-best time in the event to beat out the closest competitor by over a full second. Beeauna Thompson ran career-best times in both the 100 and 200 preliminaries, to earn lanes in the finals for both events.
"Breeauna is getting better and better every time she gets on the track," said Winsor. "She's running with a lot of confidence."
Saturday's field events begin at 10:30 a.m. PT with the women's hammer throw and the men's pole vault, while the running event finals starting at 3 p.m. PT with the men's 4x100-meter relay.
