Gowens Drives in Game-Winning Run

FRESNO, Calif. - The 25th ranked Fresno State baseball team headed into the ninth inning of Sunday's game with the ball game tied. One by one the Bulldogs loaded the bases and then sophomore Brennan Gowens hit a single to right field driving in the winning run.
The `Dogs won 4-3 to split the four-game series with the San Jose State. With the win, the Bulldogs continue to lead the Western Athletic Conference standings at 13-7 and 32-22 overall.
The Fresno State pitching staff was stellar on the mound striking out six Spartan batters and throwing seven scoreless innings. The Bulldogs left a total of 13 Spartans on base and allowed only three runs to score.
In the first inning the Spartans attempted a delayed double steal and the `Dogs caught the first runner in a run down. The SJSU runner at third headed home and Garrett Weber fired home to Trent Garrison, who tagged the runner out to retire the side.
The Spartans recorded their first hit of the game in the second inning and the Bulldogs squashed that momentum with a double play.
Derek Benny started on the mound for Fresno State. The sophomore took a 0-0 pitchers' duel into the bottom of the third inning. Benny struck out two in 4.2 innings pitched.
Senior Isacc Vivas broke up the pitchers' duel in the third inning with a two-run home run to left field giving the `Dogs the advantage, 2-0.
Jordan Ribera led off the fourth inning with a single up the middle. Gowens singled to center field advancing the runner. Weber drove in a run with a single off the left field wall increasing the Bulldogs lead, 3-0.
The Spartans scored three runs in the fifth inning tying the game, 3-3.
The pitchers' duel started again in the fifth inning after the Spartans rally. Reliever Cody Kendall held the Spartans scoreless through 2.2 innings and struck out two batters.
Sean Bonesteele took over the mound in the seventh inning to close. The senior also struck out two batters and threw 1.2 scoreless innings. Bonesteele earned the win and is 4-0 this season.
The Bulldogs got the winning run on base after a pitch hit Dusty Robinson. Junior Bobby Coyle moved the runner to third base with a single to right field. Jordan Ribera was intentionally walked to load the bases. Gowens hit a single to right field driving in the winning run.
Gowens' RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Bulldogs the win, 4-3.
