FRESNO, Ca. - The first round matchup between Fresno State's 23rd-ranked Rikus de Villiers and Remi Boutillier against No. 21 Steven Forman and Iain Atkinson of Wake Forest wasn't short on excitement, as the Deamon Deacon duo came away with a narrow victory on Thursday in Athens, Ga.
Boutillier and de Villiers pushed Forman and Atkinson to their limits, as both sets went into a tiebreaker.
Forman and Atkinson pick up a 7-6 (7-4) victory in the first set and then finished with a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second.
"I felt we played a solid match," Fresno State head coach Jay Udwadia said. "The Wake Forest team served well and there weren't many long points. It was a close match that was decided by a couple of key points.
"Rikus and Remi had a great season and I'm proud of their accomplishments."
Boutillier and de Villiers went 28-5 in 2009-10 and earned First Team All-WAC honors in singles.
