Bulldogs Advance to 2010 WAC Finale

MESA, Ariz. - The Fresno State baseball team faced and survived their first elimination game of the 2010 season after beating San Jose State 13-1 in seven innings Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs are 37-24 after the win and improve to 18-2 in WAC Tournament games. The `Dogs face Hawai'i in the night cap on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs took command of the ball game and ended the pitcher's duel in the fifth inning with a five run rally. Second baseman Danny Muno began the rally with his second hit of the afternoon, which happened to be a two-run homer.
First-team All-WAC selection Dusty Robinson hit a grand slam in the seventh inning sealed the deal for Fresno State and put the mercy rule into effect.
While the Bulldog hitters produced hits and runs against San Jose State, it was sophomore pitcher Charlie Robertson, who shut down the Spartans and kept them out of the game. Robertson threw his first career complete game and allowed only one Spartan run to score.
The Bulldogs capitalized on a Spartan mistake in the first inning to taking the lead 1-0. Danny Muno singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Bobby Coyle hit his second double of the tournament to move Muno over to third base. Muno crossed home plate on a passed ball by the San Jose State catcher.
Starting pitcher Charlie Robertson helped his own cause in the bottom of the first inning by helping turn a 1-6-3 double play with a ball hit back at him on the mound. Robertson retired the side in order in the second inning.
In the fourth inning, Jordan Ribera led off with a double to right center field. Ribera was able to produce another run for the Bulldogs after a Spartan error and a wild pitch. Fresno State took a 2-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
Third baseman Justin Charles saw a four pitch walk in the fifth inning. Muno hit a two-run blast over the right field wall increasing the Bulldogs lead 4-0. Muno records the first two RBIs of the day and has 100 career RBIs.
Robinson continued the inning with a full count walk and advanced to second base on a throwing error by the Spartan pitcher. Robinson moved to third base another miscue on the pitcher. Coyle hit an RBI single to right field that drove in Robinson and the `Dogs lead 5-0.
Ribera kept the fifth inning going with an RBI triple to right field and the Bulldogs are ahead 6-0. The junior has two career triples, the first came in Las Cruces, NM against New Mexico State.
Garrett Weber scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch and the Bulldogs continue to lead 7-0. Weber's run is the third Bulldog run that has touched home plate because of wild pitch.
Robertson sat down the Spartan batters 1-2-3 in the fifth inning. The sophomore has kept the San Jose State bats at bay allowing only five hits. Robertson threw six scoreless innings and struck out five batters.
Coyle drove in a run with an RBI double down the right field line increasing the lead 8-0 in the sixth inning. Coyle has recorded two RBIs so far today.
In the seventh inning, pinch hitter Clay Cederquist drove in a run with a single up the middle and Fresno State up 9-0. Muno walked to load the bases for Robinson, who hit a grand slam to left center field. The sophomore's home run put the `Dogs up 13-0 and put the 10-run rule into effect.
The Bulldogs advance in the 2010 WAC Tournament with a 13-1 win over San Jose State in seven innings.
