FRESNO, Calif. - Rosario Sanchez concluded her remarkable comeback season with a personal record of 52-9.50 in the shot put to finish 13th at the NCAA Championships on the campus of the University of Oregon on Friday evening.
"She did great today," head track and field coach Scott Windsor said of Sanchez. "Rosie set personal records at her last two tournaments of the season and performed very well. This is definitely a confidence builder for her as she is starting to understand she belongs with the best."
Sanchez improved 11 spots after qualifying 24th in the nation following her 12th place finish at the NCAA West Regional to earn her entry into the NCAA Championships.
The 13th-place overall finish at the national championships in the shot put is the best by Sanchez in her Bulldog career as she also competed in 2008.
A talented thrower, the redshirt sophomore has already had great success in her shot put career. She competed for Mexico and won the 2004 Central American and the Caribbean games. She then moved to Selma, Calif. where Sanchez attended Selma High School and earned three varsity letters on the Bears' track and field team. All of her success at such a young age led Sanchez to her record-setting career at Fresno State.
"Rosie was very relaxed today and went about her business," Windsor said. "She didn't spend a lot of time at the competition site before her event to stay focused on her performance and took that right approach all day."
Windsor also praised the work of Bulldog throws coach Lisa Misipeka, a three-time Olympian and the 2004 flag bearer for American Samoa, for understanding how to get the best out of student-athletes.
"Lisa is doing a tremendous job and we are fortunate to have her as a part of our program," Windsor said of his assistant coach. "She knows how to push the right buttons of each of the members of our team to help them reach their potential."
Windsor credited Sanchez for her work ethic and commitment to performing in peak form. She will serve as the President of Fresno State's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) next season and consistently excels in the classroom as an Academic All-WAC honoree.
