FRESNO, Calif. - J'Quyra Moncur-Blue will compete as one of the nation's elite hammer throwers on Thursday at the 2010 Junior National Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
"This is a phenomenal ending to her freshman year," throws coach and three-time Olympian Lisa Misipeka said of Moncur-Blue. "She is very determined to continue to get better and work toward her goals."
Moncur-Blue finished sixth at the 2009 Junior National Championships and decided to come to Fresno State to learn from Misipeka's program.
"It means a lot to `Blue' to play with the big dogs," Misipeka added. "She doesn't get scared. We are excited for her to have this opportunity to showcase her skills at this wonderful stage."
Moncur-Blue, a freshman, threw a 178-2 (54.31m) to take second at this past season's 2010 WAC championships and threw a personal-best 185-2 (56.45m) for 16th at the NCAA West Regional.
The USA Junior Championships will serve as the selection meet for the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships, July 19-25, in Moncton, Canada. The top two finishers in each event in Des Moines who meet IAAF qualifying standards will be invited to compete at the World Championship meet.
As a three-sport letterwinner at East Side High School, Moncur-Blue earned varsity letters in track and field, softball and basketball. She was named a High School All-American in track and field and won the Georgia State High School Championship in both the shot put and the discus. Moncur-Blue took first in the shot put and discus at the Regional Championships before placing sixth at the Junior National Championships.
