Detwiler and `Dogs Named Best CWS Moment

FRESNO, Calif. - In honor of the final season at historic Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium, the home of the College World Series, Sports Illustrated released the Best CWS Moments at Rosenblatt. Steve Detwiler and Fresno State's 2008 run to the National Championship was named the best CWS moment at Rosenblatt.
"Our 2008 post-season run was one to remember," said head coach Mike Batesole. "We fought major injuries, six elimination games, a month and half on the road from the WAC Tournament to the NCAA Regional to the NCAA Super Regional and on to Omaha - bigger underdogs in each succeeding venue. Yet a team of thick skinned, tough as nails Bulldogs were there to grind it out in the clutch again and again. What a team!"
The Bulldogs historic run to the program's first National Title has been relived throughout the 2010 CWS as College Baseball celebrates the final season at Rosenblatt Stadium.
In 2008, Fresno State overcame injuries, ranked opponents and as a team came together to become the first No. 4 seeded team to ever win the National Championship.
Each Bulldog stepped up in one way or another to help Fresno State continue their journey to the final series. Tom Mendonca tied a CWS record of four home runs and was named the Most Outstanding Player. Steve Susdorf returned for his senior season and set a new school record for doubles hit in a single season. Justin Wilson pitched his best outing in the final game against Georgia striking out nine batters in eight innings.
Detwiler was the unsung hero of the championship game against Georgia, which the `Dogs won, 6-1. The then sophomore played through a torn tendon in his thumb and went 4-for-4 with two home runs and he recorded all six RBIs. He also made the final out and the Bulldogs were named the CWS Champs.
Detwiler shattered the record books in that final game of the 2008 season. He set new CWS records for hits and RBIs during the series. He also tied the CWS home run record with four throughout his time in Omaha, Neb.
