FRESNO, Calif. - On the second day of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft, two Fresno State Bulldogs were selected in the first year players draft. Bobby Coyle was drafted in the 10th round (322 overall pick) by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Danny Muno was taken in the 26th round (790 overall pick) by the Chicago Cubs.
In his first season with the Bulldogs, Coyle earned his way into the starting lineup and split time between the outfield and being the designated hitter. The junior was one of four Bulldogs to earn First-Team All-WAC honors in 2010.
Coyle started 62 of 63 games for Fresno State this last season and hit .360 with a team-high 21 doubles. He recorded 11 home runs and 69 RBIs, which is tied for the most on the year with Jordan Ribera.
In 2007, Coyle was drafted out of high school by the Cleveland Indians in the 19th round, but did not sign.
Muno joined the Bulldogs in 2008 as a freshman and helped Fresno State on the magical run to winning the program's first national championship. He has appeared in every game that Fresno State has played in the past three seasons.
The second base man has re written the history Fresno State history books in his three year career. He broke the career walk record with 167 walks in his career and he became the first Bulldog to hit for the cycle on May 29, 2010. Muno is fourth in Bulldog history in career runs (204) and career doubles (53).
Muno is a three-time All-WAC selection, 2008 WAC Freshman of the Year and a Preseason All-American in 2010. This season, he hit .329 with 17 doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 33 RBIs. This is the first time that Muno has been selected in any MLB draft.
Under head coach Mike Batesole, 29 Bulldogs have been drafted in the last eight years and overall 66 of his players have been drafted in his 15 years as a head coach.
Both Coyle and Muno have a year of eligibility left at Fresno State and have until August 15 to sign contracts or return for his senior season. The final 20 rounds of the 2010 MLB draft conclude tomorrow, June 9 starting at 9:00 a.m. PT.
