`Dogs Kickoff 2010 Against Pepperdine

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State soccer team is ready to start the 2010 season. The season begins on Friday, Aug. 20 at Pepperdine. The game kicks off at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs home opener is Monday, Aug. 23 against Long Beach State. The home opener is at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium and admission is free to all.
Fresno State vs. Pepperdine
The Bulldogs and Waves have met twice in the past 16 seasons. The series is split even at 1-1. The last meeting in 2002, the Waves won 7-1in Malibu, Calif.
About the Waves
Pepperdine finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 11-7-1 and 3-3-1 in West Coast Conference play. The Waves have eight starters and 14 letterwinners returning for the 2010 season.
Revel, VanDine Named Preseason All-WAC
Senior Kaitlyn Revel and junior Kendall VanDine named to the 2010 Preseason All-WAC team. Both earned two All-WAC honors in their careers as a Bulldogs. VanDine was selected twice as a second-team honoree and Revel earned first-team honors. VanDine helped the `Dogs record five shutouts last season. All-time shutout leader, Revel, had four shutouts last year.
`Dogs Shine in Exhibition Match
The Bulldogs ended 2010 fall camp with an exhibition match against No. 14 Cal on Aug. 13. Fresno State lost the game 2-1. The Golden Bears scored the winning goal in the final 25 seconds of the match. Janna Sadowitz scored the equalizing goal and Kaitlyn Revel recorded nine saves.
Defensive Outlook
The entire back line is returning in 2010. Preseason All-WAC selection Kendall VanDine leads a defense that recorded five shutouts last year. Also, returning to the back line are sophomore Vanessa Gonzalez and senior Katie Lee. Joining the defense is freshman Lauren Lindstrom. The defense will be anchored by senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel.
Offensive Attack
The offense has a lot of familiar faces in 2010. Seniors Janna Sadowitz and Claudia Cardenas return as the forwards this season. The duo combined for eight of 14 goals in 2009. Bradlee DeShane, Bianca Lopez, Molly Nizzoli and Laura Dodd all return to the midfield. Dodd had a team-high two assists last season. Altogether the Bulldogs return 17 players from last season and added seven freshmen.
"We Are Your Team" The Bulldogs kick off the season on Aug. 20 at Pepperdine. One lucky student will walk away with a $200 gift certificate to the Kennel Bookstore at the home opener against Long Beach State on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. Admission is free to everyone.
