FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team opened the 2010 Miner Classic with a 2-1 win over UTEP Friday night. The Bulldogs improve to 1-2 on the season.
"We came out to ready play tonight," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "The team was prepared, knew their roles and executed them well. We are excited that the first win came in the third game of the season. We played well against Long Beach State and this game showed the next step. Hopefully, more wins will follow."
Senior Claudia Cardenas scored her first goal of the season in the 17th minute of the first half. The forward led the team in goals last year.
The play started with a long ball from junior Kendall VanDine. Senior Janna Sadowitz helped the ball on with a flick as Cardenas was crashing the net and knocked it passed the Miner goalkeeper. VanDine and Sadowitz were credited with assists on the play.
"The first goal was excellent effort from Janna to help the ball on, while Claudia was crashing the net," said Zwaschka. "She was in the right place at the right time."
The Bulldogs recorded eight shots in the first half and goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel had three saves. At halftime the `Dogs led 1-0.
In the 53rd minute, Laura Dodd added to the Bulldogs score with her first goal of the season. Midfielder Bradlee DeShane made a run down the field and got a cross off towards the goal. Cardenas helped the ball on to Dodd, who scored putting the `Dogs ahead 2-0.
"Bradlee had a tremendous run and her determination to cross the ball led to the second goal," said Zwaska. "Claudia helped the ball on and Laura's run was perfectly timed. She worked her tail off, so it was nice to see her rewarded with a goal."
The Miners answered with a goal from Katie Dorman in 67th minute. Anoop Josan crossed the ball and Dorman hammered into the back of the net bringing UTEP within one goal.
"The way the team played showed the level of maturity," said Zwaschka. "We had a 2-0 lead and UTEP came back with a very nice goal. We knew we needed to preserve the lead and all contributed to keep the lead."
The Bulldogs two goal proved to be enough for the win over UTEP. The `Dogs finished the game with 11 shots and Revel had four saves on the night.
Fresno State concludes the Miner Classic on Sunday, Aug. 29 against Texas State.
"We Are Your Team" The `Dogs hit the road for the Miner Classic at UTEP Aug. 27-29 and the FIU Tournament Sept. 3-5. The Bulldogs return home on Sept. 12 and play the Aggies of UC Davis. Admission to all soccer games are free for everyone.
