FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State soccer team reported for fall camp on Wednesday, Aug. 4 to begin workouts for the 2010 season. But for most of the team, the preparation began months ago with spring training and then playing with summer teams.
"The players have taken their level of seriousness and dedication to individual development to new heights," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "We had a good spring setting training precedents and teaching the players about their own development responsibilities."
The Bulldogs had 13 current players play on teams this summer fine tuning their skills and getting ready for the upcoming season.
"Much maturing has happened and to see the players take the extra initiative to play at a good level on their own this summer is testament to the hard working mentality sticking," said Zwaschka.
Juniors Laura Dodd and Rachel Pickett traveled to Canada to play with the Ottawa Fury.
Midfielder Molly Nizzoli played alongside World Cup winner Brandi Chastain, Brazilian Star SiSi, and current US National Team Player Alex Morgan on the California Storm. Nizzoli played in seven games and scored one goal.
Kaitlyn Revel joined Bulldog alums Chelsea Davis, Mary Trigg and Ali Sill on the San Francisco Night Hawks. Revel played in nine games over the summer.
Second-Team All-WAC selection Kendall VanDine played with the Santa Clarita Blue Heat. VanDine recorded three shots in 10 games.
Chrissy Smith, Janna Sadowitz and Megan Ashjian stayed close to home and played with the East Fresno Fusion.
Also staying local to play soccer was Vanessa Gonzalez, Nicole Duff, Katie Lee, Bianca Lopez and Alex Jensen, who all played for the Clovis Sidekicks. Duff played in 11 games scoring three goals. Gonzalez added two goals in seven games. Jensen recorded two assists in eight games. Lopez played in seven games over the summer. Lee recorded a goal and an assist in nine games.
"I am very excited to see the returners form compared to last year," said Zwaschka. "I feel we'll be miles ahead for our preseason this year. The players are excited to get going again, too."
