FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Ryan Colburn is off to the best start in the history of Fresno State quarterbacks. In the first three games, the Visalia native stats are better than some of the greatest quarterbacks that have come through the program like, David Carr, Billy Volek, Trent Dilfer and Kevin Sweeney.
So far this season, Colburn is 65-89-2 for a completion percentage of .730. He also has thrown for nine touchdowns. In comparison, Carr was 64-108-1 with a .593 completion percentage and six touchdowns after three games of the 2010 season.
Colburn has thrown for 786 yards, while Carr had 778 at this point in their seasons. Against SEC foe, Ole Miss, Colburn had a career-high night throwing four touchdown passes and amassing 390 yards. Twice this season he has thrown four touchdown passes in a game. Colburn went 32-42 for .761 completion rate.
Against Utah State, Colburn rushed for 44 yards and threw for 149. The senior had one touchdown pass as the `Dogs thumped the Aggies 41-24.
Colburn and the Bulldogs opened the season with an impressive 28-14 win over two-time defending Big East champions Cincinnati. He matched his career high with four touchdown passes connecting with Robbie Rouse, Jamel Hamler, Devon Wylie and Rashad Evans.Colburn completed 18 of 24 passes for 247 yards and one interception.
Colburn is a candidate for the Davey O'Brien award, which is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback. It is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. A part of the selection of the O'Brien award is fan vote. Vote for Ryan here
