FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldog volleyball team hit a speed bump in Logan, Utah, when they met the scorching-hot Utah State Aggies on their home floor and dropped their WAC road opener 3-0 on Thursday night.
"Utah State played very well," Netherby-Sewell said of the Aggies. "We couldn't find a rhythm. We made too many unforced errors. We'll regroup, learn and prepare to give Nevada a tough match."
Fresno State's Brianna Clarke recorded a team-high eight kills with no errors for a .800 hitting percentage and a pair of block assists. Sophomore outside hitter Marissa Brand added seven kills while Cecilia Agraz chipped in five kills on a 40% kill efficiency for the Bulldogs. Senior Kasey Van Grouw earned her first start of the season at setter and tossed up 19 assists during the three set contest.
"Brianna and CC stuck with the strategies we've given them," Netherby-Sewell noted of Clarke and Agraz. "It worked and they played well for us.
The `Dogs opened the match with a Brand kill from senior Lauren Berger, yet Utah State (13-2, 1-1 WAC) quickly grabbed control of the match and cruised to consecutive set victories by set scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-14.
Utah State's Shay Sorensen dominated the action and connected for a match-high 12 kills and Liz McArthur also reached double figures in kills. Another pair of Aggies, Josselyn White and Christine Morrill, led the home team with 13 and 11 digs, respectively. USU's lone WAC loss came last week on the islands at No. 6 Hawai'i.
Fresno State (6-8, 1-2 WAC) will now head west to visit the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday night.
