Patel Climbs Leader Board

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State junior Bhavik Patel shot an even par round of 72 in the third round of the Australian Master of the Amateurs golf tournament and jumped 10 positions on the leader board. He enters Friday's final round tied for 24th place among the top amateur players in the world.
Now in its 14th successful year, the Australian Master of the Amateurs 72-hole Championship is considered by many of the Worlds' leading professional and amateur golfers to be the finest Amateur Golf Championship in the world the benchmark by which all other amateur events are now being judged.
Amateurs from around the world will go stroke for stroke against each other in the 2011 Australian Master of the Amateurs 72-hole stroke amateur golf championship, to be held at the Internationally recognized Royal Melbourne Golf Club on Melbourne's legendary sandbelt.
Patel is one of four Americans in the tournament field that includes players from 13 different countries. Texas A&M's Jordan Russell (71-70-75--216) is the only U.S. player higher on the leader board. Patel entered the tournament ranked No. 49 among amateurs in the world rankings.
A two-time first-team All-WAC selection, Patel opened the tournament with a 76 and followed that up with consecutive rounds of 72 and stands at 220, 10 strokes behind England's Tom Lewis (69-72-69--210). Only 13 players posted better scores than Patel as he improved from 34th to a tie for 24th after the third round.
The tournament concludes Friday with a final round of 18 holes.
