Bulldog Tennis Back in Action

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Dogs start off their 2011 spring season at the Cal Winter Invitational in Berkley, Ca. Fresno State will compete the next three days against No. 41 Saint Mary's, Cal Poly and host No. 10 California.
In doubles today, the Dogs battled it out against the nationally ranked No. 64 Cal Poly Mustangs. Junior Laura Pola and freshman Marianne Jodoin pulled out a victory for the Dogs after defeating the No. 64 nationally ranked doubles team Alexa Lee and Amy Markhoff, 8-4.
Newly paired doubles team, Abby Hayley and Bianca Modoc took on Cal Poly's Ashley Pane and Jocelyn Davis. After a close competition the Mustangs pulled ahead and took the win, 8-3.
Fresno State's Anna Mikhaylova teamed up with freshman, Jennifer Cornea from Cal Poly to take on the Mustang's Ane McPike and Kathryn Webb. Webb and McPike took an early lead and defeated the Bulldog and Mustang, 8-1.
In singles, the Dogs meet up with the No. 41 Saint Mary's Gaels.
Both nationally ranked players, No. 75 Jodoin, Fresno State, took on No. 85 Alexandra Poorta, Saint Mary's. The senior Gael earned the victory over the freshman Bulldog, 6-2, 6-1.
Fresno State's other nationally ranked player, No. 81 Hayley took on Laurie Gingras. After sweeping her in the first match, 6-0, Hayley won the second set, 6-2.
Earning the second victory in singles today, Modoc intense playing and focus brought her back after losing the first set to Diana Bukajeva, 5-7. In the next two sets she battled and beat the Gael, 6-3, 6-1.
Fresno State's junior, Pola, dropped the match to the Gael's Jenny Jullien, 6-4, 6-2. Ana Chkhkivishvili, the junior from Saint Mary's earned the win over the Bulldog's McQueen, 6-4, 6-4. Kirpicheva, the sophomore from Russia, dropped both her sets today against sophomore Molly Aloia, 6-2, 6-3.
Mikhaylova competed against Cal Poly's McPike again in singles. After winning the first set and dropping the second one, Mikhaylova pushed McPike to a super tiebreaker but the Mustang came out on top, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0(10-5).
Tomorrow, the Bulldogs will take on Saint Mary's in doubles and will battle against the high-ranking No. 10 California in singles.
This season, Fresno State will compete with each of these teams. Saint Mary's will make a visit to Spalding G. Wathen tennis Center on Feb. 3 for the Bulldogs home opener of the dual season.
