FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team opened up their spring season at the Arizona Intercollegiate in weather that gave a harsh reminder that it is still winter. The Bulldogs finished their suspended second round in tenth place with five holes remaining. The Dogs battled the elements and the course throughout the day and eventually play was postponed due to darkness.
"It started off cold and got colder," head coach Mike Watney remarked. "It was just nasty out there."
There were reports of eight squalls and two bouts of hail during play and the overall scores reflected it. Only six players shot under par for the first round, including Fresno State senior Michael Gideon. Gideon shot a one-under 70 which included an eagle on the par-five 18th and three birdies.
Junior Brian Sunker finished the first round on a high note with an eagle on the par-five fifth. He was tied for 16th with a one-over 72.
The Dogs shot an opening round 299 (+15) to put them in 11th place out of 16 teams. They were able to come out strong in the second round to move five shots behind 19th ranked California.
Junior Bhavik Patel had a rough first round but rebounded with a two-under through 13 holes in the second. Last Monday during team qualifying Patel's round of 61 tied the all-time course record at Riverbend Golf Club in Madera.
Senior Bryan Hogan sunk three birdies and finished the first round with a five-over 76 while freshman Nate Jessup shot a ten-over 81. Senior Adam Barkow is competing as an individual and finished with a four-over 75.
Action resumes tomorrow as the Bulldogs finish their five remaining second round holes along with the third and final round.
"We need a Nick Watney kind of round," coach Mike Watney said in reference to the former Bulldog's play in the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines yesterday. Watney shot a final round 63, the lowest round of the tournament, to jump from tied for 56th to tied for sixth.
"We are Your Team!" The Bulldog men's golf team continues play in the Arizona Intercollegiate at the Arizona National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. Tuesday morning. Live tournament scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
