FRESNO, Calif. - Former Bulldog Tom Mendonca and the USA World Cup/Pan Am team opened the Pan Am Games with a 20-2 win over the Dominican Republic Friday, Oct. 20 in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico. The team is fresh off the heals of its Co-Bronze medal performance at the World Cup games and starting strong in the new tournament.
Mendonca went 3-for-4 with six RBI, two doubles and two runs. With the US up 5-0 in the top of the fifth, Mendonca cleared the bases, collecting his first three RBI on the day with a double to right center.
The eighth was the biggest inning for the US and its last of the contest. Mendonca hit his second double scoring two more runs to bring the score up 10-2. The next batter homered to left field, scoring Mendonca.
Mendonca returned to the plate that same inning and picked up his final RBI on a sac hit to first. The U.S. scored 10 runs in the top of the eighth to end the game after holding the Dominican Republic off the board in the bottom of the inning.
Mendonca has started all 12 of the USA World Cup/Pan Am team's games. He is tied for third on the team in hits (13) and is batting .283.
