FRESNO, Calif. - Anyone who has ever heard anything about Major League Baseball knows the New York Yankees and their tough fans. Yankee Stadium is certainly not the most welcoming place for visiting teams, especially during the playoffs. But former Bulldog Doug Fister took his Detroit Tigers into the lions' den and led them to an American League Division Championship.
"It's a tremendous feeling," said Fister of the 3-2 ALDS Game 5 win Thursday night in a post game interview with MLB.com.
The right hander gave Detroit a strong start, holding the Yankees off the board for 4.2 innings. Fister gave up a solo two-out homer to Robinson Cano in the fifth before forcing Alex Rodriguez to ground out to second.
He left the contest after five innings having fanned four batters and giving up the single run.
"It was one of those things that everybody just played together and just picked each other up," Fister said. "If it wasn't the offense, it was the defense and everybody coming out of the bullpen. It was a tremendous team effort."
Fister came into the postseason with a 1.79 ERA in 70.1 innings pitched with the Tigers and an 8-1 record. He now has a 1-1 record with 9.2 innings pitched in postseason play.
The Tigers begin their quest for the pennant against the reigning AL Champion Texas Rangers on Saturday, Oct. 8. in Texas.
