FRESNO, Calif. - Baseball America has been ranking the nation's top NCAA Division I recruiting classes for over a decade. This year they announced Fresno State as the 19th best recruiting class in the country. The newcomers join a program that has won a national championship and five Western Athletic Conference Championships in the past six years and has a rich history of success.
"We have had several classes ranked," said Head Coach Mike Batesole. "This year's class, with a national ranking of 19, is a nice indication that we are continuing to recruit the right type of student-athlete that will lead Fresno State baseball to conference championships, NCAA post season appearances and compete on a national level. We expect these guys to get their degrees and we expect them to compete everyday on the field. We expect them to be great members of the Fresno State community."
The Bulldogs picked up three local products in the recruiting season. Jordan Brink (Fresno, Calif./Central HS), who led his team to the California Interscholastic Federation semifinals in 2011, struck out 78 batters in 51 innings pitched during his senior season. He spent his summer playing alongside future teammate Jordan Luplow (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS) with the California Blaze. Luplow was a two-sport student-athlete who missed most of his senior year due to injury, but made the most of his time on the diamond, finishing with a .385 batting average and one home run in four games played.
Brink was named to the 2011 First Team All-TRAC and First Team All-Valley along with Chris Mariscal (Clovis, Calif./Clovis North HS). Drafted by the Orioles in the 41st round of the 2011 draft, shortstop Mariscal hit .418 with four home runs his senior year.
"Our entire staff did a great job of making sure we signed the best players from the central valley," said Batesole. "After that, we secured several players from throughout the west coast that can help this program address the immediate needs of a team that saw 10 student-athletes drafted in 2011."
