FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's indoor track and field team finished a second day of competition in Seattle, Wash at the UW Indoor Open with 13 Dogs placing in the top 10 in their events and multiple personal bests.
"We had another good day (in Seattle)," said head coach Scott Winsor. "It's important to note that a lot of good things are coming from our underclassmen."
Two freshman Bulldogs had strong performances in the 60-meter hurdles, both finishing in the top 10. Freshmen Erin Morris finished second in the race with a time of 8.92 and Taylor Jackson ninth with a time of 9.38.
Sophomore Breeauna Thompson won the 400-meter event, crossing the finish line with a time of 55.79. Her time topped her best race time from her first year as a Dog. She improved her personal best by nearly one second.
Close behind Thompson were her teammates, Latrisha Jordan who finished third with a time of 56.91 and Tiera Hilliard, fourth with a time of 57.14.
Freshman Saylah Barserian placed seventh in the 800-meter race. She finished with a time of 2:16.46.
"Saylah is more of a mile runner," said Winsor. "We put her in the 800-meter for some speed work and she did really well."
Ann Poythress placed seventh in the 3000-meter event. The junior academically but first year track and field participant, literally ran her first ever track event in her life at the UW Indoor Open. She ran the 3000-meter in a time of 10:14.20, impressive for a first ever competitive run.
In field events, more young Bulldogs stood out with strong performances.
Kathryn Olivero performed an all-time personal best in the triple jump event. She competed with a short approach and the freshman earned a third place finish with a 36-9.75 (11.22m) mark.
In the weight throw event three Bulldogs had impressive personal records. Freshman Meagan McKee won the event with a mark of 61-4 (18.69m). McKee had a PR at the Husky Classic and again at the UW Indoor Open, improving over two consecutive days.
Freshman Caitlin Byrd placed sixth in the weight throw with a 54-6.75 (16.63m) mark. Sophomore J'Quyra Moncur-Blue, a sophomore, finished seventh with a throw of 54-6 (16.61m), right behind Byrd. Both weight throwers achieved PR marks.
"All in all we had a very good day and a very strong day," said Coach Winsor. "We ended the weekend on a high note and now we can get even more focused and prepare for what ahead. We have 2 weeks until the WAC Championships."
