FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team (293, +5) is in sixth place after the first round of competition at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate held at the Turtle Bay Resort on the island of O'ahu.
The Bulldogs were aided by senior Bryan Hogan's three birdies on his final three holes of the 7,198-yard, par-72 Arnold Palmer Course and finished at one-over 73.
"What Hogan did was significant," head coach Mike Watney remarked. "It lifted all of our spirits and we are looking forward to tomorrow."
Junior Bhavik Patel ended the day tied for eighth with a 1-under 71, the lowest score for the Dogs. Bhavik, the NCAA leader in birdies, added two more giving him a total of 77 on the year. Patel is three strokes behind co-leaders Max Homa of Cal and Conrad Shindler of Texas A&M (4-under, 68).
No. 10 Texas A&M and No. 23 Cal share the tournament lead at 5-under 283 and the closest team is SMU at 1-over 289, followed by Nevada (290, +2) and BYU Hawai'I (292, +4). The Bulldogs are one shot ahead of No.17 Virginia (294, +6).
