FRESNO, Calif. - First pitch of the 2011 baseball season is hours away, but the Fresno State Bulldogs are earning some attention early for their efforts on and off the field.
Transfer Chris Mallory earned an academic award from the California Community College Athletic Association. Mallory, a junior from Allan Hancock College was selected as a member of the 2010 CCCAA Scholar Athlete Honor Roll.
On the field, Jordan Ribera was named to the Golden Spikes Watch List for 2011. The first baseman led the nation, league and team in home runs. Ribera was also named team and league MVP for 2010. The watch list features 50 of the nation's top amateur players and will be presented live on Monday, July 11, at the 2011 Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest in Phoenix, Ariz. The senior is one of two athletes from the conference to be named to the watch list, the other being Kolten Wong of Hawai'i.
The NCBWA gave the Bulldogs a preseason ranking of No. 35 in the country. Fresno State is the only Western Athletic Conference team in the top 35. The Bulldogs play Washington State, who is ranked No. 34, in March. The Dogs also play four schools that are receiving votes (Cal Poly, Hawai'i, Oregon State and San Diego). It is the second poll the Dogs are represented in, as Collegiate Baseball Newspaper ranks the Bulldogs No. 29 heading into the season.
