Sanchez Takes WAC Indoor Title

FRESNO, Calif. - The Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet concluded today in Nampa, Idaho with six Bulldogs finishing in the top five in their events, one taking a WAC title and the team finishing in sixth-place overall with 67 points.
"We are scoring more points and that is a positive," said head coach Scott Winsor. "Yesterday we had a great day and everyone qualified for finals who should have and things went really well.
"Ann Poythress ran her second race ever in track and field and did a great job in the 3,000-meter race," continued Winsor. "Rosie Sanchez was the conference champion in the shot. Shanelle Stephens, who have one steel rod in each leg competed in her first meet all year; she stepped in and ran to a fifth-place finish in conference. I am proud of the way the ladies fought today and a lot of good came out of this meet."
Rosario Sanchez won the shot put event in the final day of the WAC Indoor Track and Field Meet. She marked a 50-2.75 (15.31m) to take the title and earn her team some important points for her team. This is her first title in the shot put for indoor track and field, Sanchez finished second in 2008.
Saylah Barserian had an outstanding race in the mile by clocking a time of 4:59.62. The freshman finished in second place for the Dogs. Marrijtje Molenhuis was also a top competitor in the distance event, finishing fourth with a time of 5:02.77. Both distance runners earned points for their team.
The Dogs finished the 400-meter race in third, fifth and sixth-place. Breeauna Thompson, who came down with a stomach flu the night before and powered thorugh all her races, finished in third with a time of 56.15. Latrisha Jordan placed fifth with a time of 56.37 and Tiera Hilliard was right behind her in sixth with a time of 56.87. All three Dogs scored crucial points for their team.
Shanelle Stephens competed in her first meet of the 2010-11 season. Stephens ran the 60-meter sprint in 7.73 and a fifth place finish.
Kathryn Olivero placed tenth in the triple jump event with a mark of 36-6.25 (11.13m) and Courtney Castaneda marked a 35-2 (10.72m).
"We Are Your Team!" - The Dogs travel to Seattle, Wash. March 5 to compete in the University of Washington Indoor Final Qualifier. The Dogs also open the indoor season the same day at the Cal Quad in Berkeley, Calif. Stay updated on gobulldogs.com for recaps and results.
