Gonzalez Fans 12, Dogs Win

LINCOLN, Neb. - Senior Greg Gonzalez' career outing propelled No. 20 Fresno State baseball to shutout No. 29 Nebraska 1-0 on Saturday. Gonzalez struck out a career-high 12 batters as the Dogs won their third game against a ranked opponent. His previous career-high was 10 strikeouts against CSU Bakersfield in 2010.
The Bulldogs are 11-1 on the season and have won five games in a row.
Gonzalez did not give up any walks in seven innings pitched. He earned his third win of the season on the mound and has an ERA of .98. Gonzalez has thrown 14 consecutive scoreless innings.
The Bulldogs threatened early after outfielder Dusty Robinson hit a double to center field in the second inning. Nebraska made it out of the inning preserving the scoreless tie and the pitcher's duel began. Neither starter on the mound gave up a run through the first five innings. In the sixth inning the Bulldogs put a run on the board ending the duel on the hill.
Gonzalez sat the Huskers batters down in order in the bottom of the second inning. The senior had a no-hitter through five and two-thirds innings, but it was broken up with a single to left field. He allowed only two hits in his fourth start of the year.
Second baseman Pat Hutcheson sparked the Bulldog offense in the bottom of the fifth inning with a stand up double to right field. Danny Muno followed with a five pitch walk. Brennan Gowens reached on a fielder's choice as Muno was tagged out at second and Hutcheson advanced to third on the play. Senior Garrett Weber broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single to center field giving the Dogs a 1-0 lead.
Junior Charlie Robertson came out of the bullpen in the eighth inning striking out two batters in two innings of work. He recorded his sixth save in as many appearances. The single season record of saves is 13 and was set by Brandon Burke in 2008.
Weber's RBI base knock gave the Bulldogs the 1-0 win over the Huskers. The Dogs conclude the three-game series against Nebraska Sunday, March 13 at 11:05 a.m. PT.
"We Are Your Team!" Fresno State concludes the series against Nebraska on Sunday, March 13 at 11:05 a.m. The Dogs return home on March 17 to hosting Washington State for four-game series.
