FRESNO, Calif. - On a blustery day at Sunnyside Country Club, the 2011 Fresno State Lexus Classic was in full swing and after the first day of competition the Fresno State men's team sits in a tie for tenth place. The Bulldogs (379-381--760) were not able take advantage of the home course advantage and ended the day at 40-over on the 6,960-yard, par-72 course.
"It was a tough day out there for the Bulldogs," head coach Mike Watney remarked. "Other than Bhavik we didn't handle the wind very well. It was great to see that Sunnyside was in beautiful shape. San Diego State sure showed they are the class of the field."
San Diego State (366-355--721), ranked No. 7 in the nation, will head into the final day of competition sitting comfortably in the top spot after shooting a 5-under during the second round and one-over par overall. No. 19 Duke (377-361--738) is in a distant second at 18-over with UC Irvine (374-365--739, +19), Pacific (375-366--741, +21) and BYU (373-374--747, +27) right behind to round out the top five.
Alex Johnson (71-66--137) of Pacific holds a two shot lead over UC Irvine's Bryan Harris (70-69--139) and SDSU's J.J. Spaun (71-68--139), who are tied for second at five-under. Johnson fired a low round 66 on the second set of 18 by way of four birdies, an eagle and no bogeys. Spaun tied fellow teammate Tom Berry and UTEP's Roberto Ruiz with nine birdies, the most on the day.
Junior Bhavik Patel (73-72--145) claimed the best score of the day for the Bulldogs with a one-over, which puts him in a tie for eleventh place. Patel scattered six birdies among the two rounds on the magnificent tree-lined course.
Senior Bryan Hogan (75-76--151) went bogey-free on the front nine during the first round and ended the day seven-over par. Freshman Nate Jessup (75-77--152) was right behind Hogan at eight-over, with Michael Gideon (78-77--155), Brian Sunker (78-79--157) and Brad Wyatt (79-80--159) finishing at 11, 13 and 15-under, respectively.
