FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head soccer coach Brian Zwaschka announced the addition of freshman Morgan Castain to the Bulldogs roster Wednesday. A Castro Valley native, Castain transfers to Fresno State after a year playing for Washington State University.
"Morgan is a terrific late addition to our team for 2011," said Zwaschka. "She has had a very successful ODP, club, and high school career and has since gained invaluable experience at the top level of Division 1 soccer spending a season with Washington State in the PAC-10. She is coming to us with new aspirations that align very nicely with our own for the direction of our program, and we are thrilled for her in being able to help fulfill her desire to be back in California and a bit closer to home where she can work to play in front of her family and friends more frequently. We feel Morgan brings a great blend of technique, poise, and athleticism to our team to help us achieve our goals in our final year in the WAC and with the transition to the MWC. We look forward to having her join us very soon."
Castain has three seasons and a redshirt left in her eligibility. She is available to play starting this upcoming season. While at WSU, Castain started in five matches, appeared in 11 and recorded 12 shots.
"What helped me figuring out where I wanted to go was location," said Castain. "California is where I want to be, and Fresno is a lot closer to home. I signed at Fresno State because when I visited it felt right, I liked the environment a lot, and it just feels like somewhere that I would call home."
Castain went to Castro Valley High School, where former Bulldog Ali Sill also played. In 2010, Castain was named team MVP and was a 2010 All-East Bay selection.
During her senior season, Castro Valley won the North Coast Section Division I title. She was the league assist leader during her junior and senior campaigns. Castain was selected to the ESPN Rise All-State team and was No. 4 in the ESPN Rise FAB 50.
"The Fresno State soccer program is great and I really like the coaching staff," said Castain. "My goals for soccer are to work hard in training and games, to improve myself as much as possible, to do my best and help the team in any way I can. I am most excited about getting to school and starting a new experience there, beginning with the next fall season. I want to graduate with a degree in either psychology or criminal justice. I am really happy and think I will do great at Fresno State and I know going to school there will be good for me."
In her senior year, Castain recorded 12 goals and 17 assists. During her junior year, she recorded 15 goals and 17 assists. In 2008, Castain scored nine goals and had 16 assists. She was a four-year starter on varsity and four-time All-Hayward Area Athletic League.
Castain played club soccer for the California Northstars, who were the 2010 USYS U-19 Region IV Champions and played in the 2010 USYS U-19 National Championships. While she played with the Northstars, they also won the 2010 CYSA-North U-19 State Cup Championship.
Castain also played for the Region IV Olympic Development team in 2008 and 2009. She was invited to the 2009 Region IV Invitational camp. While on the ODP team, Castain won ODP Championships in 2008 and 2009.
