FRESNO, Calif. - Bulldogs women's basketball coach Adrian Wiggins announced the transfer of Rachael Pecota to Fresno State. Pecota, a native of San Francisco, Calif., spent the last two years playing for Northeastern in Boston, Mass.
"We recruited Rachael hard when she was coming out of high school and we are thrilled she decided to return to the West Coast to play college basketball," Coach Wiggins said. "She's will really fit into what we do. She's an inside-outside player who can shoot threes and I expect her college career will take off in our program. She was highly recruited out of the Bay Area and we've had a lot of success with players from there. We are looking forward to getting her on campus."
A 6-0 forward, Pecota led the Huskies last year with 13.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Her best performance of the season came against Syracuse last November when she scored a career-high 25 points, including seven made three-pointers, while grabbing seven rebounds and three steals. Pecota appeared in all 31 games as a freshman, making six starts.
Pecota attended The Urban School in San Francisco where she played varsity basketball for four seasons. She was named the 25th best wing in the 2009 class by ESPN/Hoopgurlz and was a four-time All-Bay Counties League West selection and the league Player of the Year as a senior.
Also as a senior, Pecota was a McDonald's All-American nominee and a NorCalPreps.com All-Nor-Cal Division 5 selection. She holds the school record for most points scored in a single game with 37 and led her team to a league championship and the second-best finish in school history.
Her father, the late Scott Pecota, played football at Idaho State and San Francisco State and cousin, Bill Pecota, played professional baseball for nine seasons with the Kansas City Royals, New York Mets and Atlanta Braves from 1986-94.
Pecota will have to sit out the 2011-12 season to satisfy NCAA transfer requirements. Fresno State has one scholarship remaining for the 2011-12 season.
