FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State soccer team hosted the first of their spring free clinics for local youth soccer players on Sunday, April 3 before taking on Cal State Stanislaus in a spring game. The clinic had 150 children attend and 20 coaches attended the coaches clinic.
"It was really wonderful to see so many kids having fun and playing soccer," said assistant coach Kevin Botterill. "Everybody in our program is grateful for what the sport of soccer has given to us. I was really pleased to see how engaged our players were in giving back to the community, and passing on a little of their passion for the game to the kids they were interacting with."
The players were grouped according to age and were taken through a rotation of games that emphasized fun and touches on the ball. Each station was run by a current Fresno State soccer player, with other players assigned to stay with each group throughout the rotation.
"It was a great experience working with the kids and seeing how excited they got about the game of soccer," said All-WAC midfielder Molly Nizzoli. "I especially liked that the kids got to stick around to watch us play after getting to know us during the clinic."
Immediately following the clinic, the Bulldogs took to the field and defeated Cal State Stanislaus State, 4-2. Vanessa Gonzalez, Kendall Van Dine and Callie Hancock all recorded goals against the Warriors.
The Bulldogs team will host another pair of clinics at the end of the Spring and people are advised to register quickly.
